What the World Needs Now 3/5

What the World Needs Now 3/5

what the world needs now.jpg

What the world needs now is to be turned upside down. The beatitudes are a lovely description of a world, but seemingly not the world we are actually living in. What are we to make of a descriptive account (“blessed are…”) that does not seem to correspond to our reality? Reading this text, we are rehearsing a subversive script, trafficking in rumors, whispering conspiratorially about a coming time when the present world will be turned upside down, and a new world will emerge. The only way to prepare is to dare to live now as if that new world were already present.

Interrogating the Deity: 3/4

Flying from LA to NY, can you ever really say, "Now I'm in Kansas"?

Flying from LA to NY, can you ever really say, "Now I'm in Kansas"?

So Job says he wants to talk to God, argue it out. His insistence on not settling for the easy answer is... admirable? lunatic? You decide. Job 22 and 23.

Lance Pape, a professor at Brite Divinity School (TCU) and our pastor's spouse, helps us think about how the world really works in God's care. Is it fair? Is it good? Is it simple? Hm. Psalm 1 and Psalm 73 are the two texts you need to get started. (These four lessons are like a mini-series -- you need to hear this one before you hear the next one, etc.)

A guest preacher! Dr. Lance Pape, Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Brite Divinity School (and spouse of our pastor), says Christianity is not so much about believing the right things, but about what we find beautiful.  Amen.

Passion: The Sovereignty of Suffering

To begin Holy Week, we paved the aisle in palms and read Luke's account of Jesus' suffering. Lance Pape (known to a few as Honeydog #1) preached. (He also built a cross for the sanctuary. He also sang tenor in a mostly a cappella rendition of "O Sacred Head." But it's the preaching we couldn't have done without.)

Basic #3: The Hard Part

What she said: "Honey, will you take a turn in the Galileo pulpit?" What he said: "But Galileo doesn't have a pulpit." What she said: "It's a metaphor. Will you preach the good news for us?" What he said: "Of course. What's the text?" What she said: "Matthew 4:1-11. It's the one about…" What he said: "I know what it's about. And you want good news from that?" What she said: "I know you can do it, sweetie." And he did. Please give a listen to Rev. Lance Pape, Professor of Homiletics at Brite Divinity School, spouse of our pastor.
