What to Expect in Worship
Worship opens with a short video, which we don’t have copyright to share online. The host will share a link to it in the chat. The video is mostly to remind you that the pre-Worship slide show is over, and it’s time to get settled, wherever you are. Then:
Welcome & Orientation. Someone says how glad we are to see everyone, and how to participate in Worship, and here we go!
Query. We ask “an old question that people of faith have been asking each other for a long time,” and give everybody 2 minutes to think it over or talk it over.
Body Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. We include simple motions to draw our bodies into prayer along with our spirits. It helps us concentrate.
Scripture and Song. We read from the Bible, sometimes asking worshippers to add their voices to the readings. And we sing a variety of songs that are meant to help us reflect on the themes of scripture. We’re hoping online worshippers will read and sing along with the whole church!
Sermon. We attend to scripture by asking our theologian-in-residence to take us deeper into it. It’s okay to crochet, or color, or “rest your eyes” (wink, wink) during the sermon. Whatever helps you the most.
Communion! This is our favorite part, when Jesus invites literally everybody to his table to share bread and cup. Get something to eat and something to drink, and remember Jesus with us. There are no qualifications for joining in communion, because Jesus has already invited you. Yep, even kids. Yep, even atheists. Yep, even you. (Our theology here may be different than you’re used to. We really believe Jesus means to include everyone at his table as a sign of God’s radically inclusive love. Really.)
We set aside 5 minutes for communion, and there are several additional ways to engage with worship during this time. You can:
Let us pray for you (there’s a button for that), and you can pray for others. You can see others’ public prayers, and they can see yours, on our online prayer wall. You don’t need special words. Just lift up yourself, your beloveds, your neighbors, and your enemies to God.

Reflect on tonight’s theme. There’s a question to guide your thoughts and conversation on the screen.
Finally: back together! At worship’s end, we sing our closing song and receive a benediction (word of blessing and challenge). Go in peace!
