The Basics
There are lots of complexities in the life of faith, a lot of gray areas, but there are also some basics. You might even say “fundamentals,” if fundamentals didn’t have such a bad rep already. What are the most basic steps to our full participation in Christ-like faith? Let’s strip it down.
Basic 1: Recognition. Recognition is the first thing required of us with respect to the Mysterious Divine. Can you see what God is doing? Just see it for what it is? That’s all – you don’t have to like it; you just have to see it. That’s what the wise men did. Step one. Matthew 2:1-12, Isaiah 60:1-6.
Basic 2: Acceptance. Once you’ve seen what God is doing, and how God wants you to be part of it, you get a chance to say “yes” or “no.” Everybody, even Jesus, gets the same choice. Jesus said “yes” at his baptism. Have you said “yes”? Matthew 3:13-17.
Basic 3: The Hard Part. Now you can see what God is doing; you’ve said yes to what God is doing; and the hardest part comes next. Call it temptation, call it the time of trial, call it Life Sucks and Then You Die. Jesus went through it, too. Yeah, AFTER he said “yes.” Because that’s just the way this works. Matthew 4:1-11.
Basic 4: Ta-Dah! After the recognition, the acceptance, the hard part – now you actually have something to show the world, something to say that’s worth hearing, the GOSPEL, the capital-G Good capital-N News. Live it, tell it, love it. Matthew 4:12-23.
