This series moves us through the second third, roughly, of Ordinary Time, or the Sundays After Pentecost. We’re tracking (mostly) with the Revised Common Lectionary readings from Matthew, and supplementing with “greatest hits” from Isaiah.

Don’t Assume Bigger Is Better. Jesus calls us to appreciate the power of small things – the mustard seed, the yeast. Perhaps we’re meant to understand that even small faith is faith, and any faith is so much bigger than no faith. Isaiah 2:5-22; Matthew 13:31-33.

Don’t Assume a Lack of Resources. What we need to fulfill God’s plan for us, we have. We’re not asked to do what we can’t resource. Isaiah 55:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21.

Don’t Assume Your Own Powerlessness. Jesus walks on water, and he’s glad to invite you to step out in faith. He figures you’ve got what it takes. Isaiah 9:1-7; Matthew 14:22-36.

Don’t Assume Your Shit Don’t Stink. The obsession of Very Religious People with other people’s wrongness is a habit we don’t want to adopt. Isaiah 10:1-4 & 11:1-5; Matt. 15:1-20.

Don’t Assume God’s Not Working Just Because You Can’t See It. Sometimes God is obvious and sometimes God is sneaky-subtle. But sometimes we just can’t see what God is up to; developing “eyes to see” is one of our primary tasks as a community. Isaiah 11:1-9; Matthew 15:29–16:12.

Don’t Assume This Should Be Easier. Following Jesus employs our best selves in the hardest work we’ve ever done, and sometimes it feels like we’re dying. Sometimes we are. Isaiah 42:1-9; Matthew 16:13-28.

Don’t Assume Mercy Makes You Weak. God has this obsession with making allowances, including everybody, interpreting generously, forgiving mistakes; God hopes mightily that we will do the same for each other. Isaiah 56:1-8; Matthew 18:1-35.

Don’t Assume God Honors Loopholes. Looking for ways to get self-centered life choices past God’s sin detection radar is just dumb. Make decisions with integrity. Lean into what God wants. Isaiah 58; Matthew 19:1-12.

Don’t Assume This Path Is Going to Get You Anything. Indeed, it’s costly, this following of Jesus. How can we divorce our religion from the (assumed) rewards that come with it? What is it like to do it just because it’s beautiful? Isaiah 64:1-4; Matt. 19:13–20:16.
